Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) appointed former U.S. ambassador to Norway and the 77th Secretary of the Navy, Kenneth J. Braithwaite, as Chairman of their Board of Directors.
“It is a pleasure and a privilege to welcome Ambassador Braithwaite into the FMM Board of Directors as Chairman,” said Fincantieri Marine Group CEO George Moutafis. “His unique experience and vantage point on our Navy’s and Nation’s needs will prove invaluable, and we are fortunate to have him.”
Braithwaite brings a distinguished career in defense and public service to the role, as well as deep Navy ties. He is a 1984 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and earned a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. His active naval service included time as a naval aviator flying anti-submarine missions in the Pacific and Arctic, and later as a public affairs officer on USS America, where he participated in NATO and Mediterranean-Indian Ocean deployments. He left active duty in 1993 but continued serving in the Navy Reserve until retiring as a Rear Admiral. Highlights of his reserve service include deploying for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, serving as the first commander of the Joint Public Affairs Support Element - Reserve, and deploying to Pakistan for disaster assistance after the 2005 earthquake.
Braithwaite’s private sector career began with an executive role at Atlantic Richfield (ARCO). He transitioned to public service as a senior advisor and state director for U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) in 1997. Subsequently, he held key leadership positions in the healthcare industry, including Vice President roles at Ascension Health (St. Thomas Health Services) and serving as executive director of the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council. Before becoming Ambassador to Norway, he was a Group Senior Vice President at Vizient, Inc., a national hospital performance improvement company he helped create through a merger.
He was sworn in as the 77th Secretary of the Navy on May 29, 2020, following his service as the 31st U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway, during President Trump’s first administration.
Braithwaite joins fellow FMM board members, former Wisconsin governor James Doyle and Vice Adm. (USN, Ret.) Ronald Boxall, as well as former secretary-level military acquisitions principals Steffanie Easter and James Geurts, all as outside directors.

As part of a general fleet review launched by the U.S. Navy, aimed at transitioning towards a future model focused on technological excellence, manned and unmanned vessels, and a long-term sustainability, Fincantieri and the U.S. Navy have reached a significant agreement that provides for reshaping the future of the Constellation-class Program, currently under construction at Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM), in Wisconsin. In this framework, Fincantieri is consolidating its strategic partnership with the Navy, confirming its role as a key player in defining the future of American maritime defense through advanced industrial capabilities and long-term investments.
Working closely with the U.S. Navy, the Group will help deliver new classes of vessels. Fincantieri is expected to receive new orders to deliver classes of vessels in segments that best serve the immediate interests of the nation and the renaissance of U.S. shipbuilding, such as amphibious, icebreaking and other special missions. Fincantieri is in fact ready to execute the contracts planned in coordination with the U.S. Navy. Entering into the future and in alignment with the Group’s industrial capabilities and potential, Fincantieri will support the U.S. Navy, as it redefines strategic choices in the Small Surface Combatants segment, manned or unmanned.
Considering the above, the agreement encompasses the continuity of work for two Constellation-class frigates currently under construction and provides for the discontinuity of the contract for the four other Constellation-class frigates already under contract, reflecting the evolving strategic priorities of the U.S. Navy. On top of the aforementioned award of future orders, in order to cover the above, the agreement indemnifies Fincantieri Marine Group, on existing economic commitments and industrial impacts through measures provided by the U.S. Navy, as a result of the contractual decision made for its own convenience.
This new arrangement guarantees continuity and workload visibility for Fincantieri’s personnel and the Wisconsin System of Yards – a vital pillar of the U.S. maritime industrial base –, capitalizing on the investments and expertise developed to date. Over the past years, Fincantieri has invested more than $800 million in its four U.S. shipyards, including Marinette, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, and Jacksonville, with the aim of ensuring maximum production efficiency, flexibility, and technological innovation. These investments have enabled the consolidation of an advanced industrial supply chain, capable of meeting the U.S. Navy’s new priorities, including rapid delivery, modularity, and scalability of naval platforms.
Fincantieri Marine Group currently employs approximately 3,750 highly skilled workers in the United States, having recently increased its workforce by 850 workers to meet demand and strengthen its industrial base. This significant expansion underscores the Group’s commitment to supporting the local economy and the broader national maritime supply chain.
George Moutafis, CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group, commented: “The agreement reached with the U.S. Navy marks a new chapter in our strategic partnership, built on mutual trust, a shared vision and commitment to excellence. The path forward defined on the Constellation-class program provides for the necessary stability for our teams and the entire Wisconsin System of Yards, allowing us to continue investing in innovation and skills. As the Navy transitions to new vessel types, we stand ready to support their evolving needs, leveraging the strength of our American facilities and the expertise we have fostered. Our investments in the U.S. shipyards are a testament to our long-term vision: to be a cornerstone of the U.S. maritime industrial base and a driving force to sustain the momentum of the national shipbuilding renaissance the American shipbuilding renaissance.”
In the future development model, Fincantieri positions itself as one of the reference shipyards for the U.S. Navy, confirming its strategic role in supporting the Navy’s evolving needs. The Group is looking forward to working with all stakeholders in the supply chain on the execution of the new redefined path forward, further developing the skills and expertise cultivated in its American facilities and supporting the sustainable growth of the sector.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MARINETTE, WISCONSIN – Officials at Fincantieri Marinette Marine hosted University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin and members of her team May 2, in the bustling Marinette shipyard 50 miles north of Green Bay.
The purpose of the visit was to update the chancellor on the successful international internship program Fincantieri started last year with engineering students at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
FMM’s leader, Jan Allman, was joined by Fincantieri Marine Group CEO, Marco Galbiati, and together they led the chancellor and key university officials through the newly renovated shipyard. They also gave Mnookin an overview of the many naval programs being supported by Fincantieri in Northeast Wisconsin. FMM is currently building two different types of ships for the U.S. Navy, and four additional vessels for a foreign allied navy.
“Partnerships like this can be ‘eye-opening’ for students, many of whom may not be familiar with the maritime industry,” said Allman. “We have tremendous career opportunities for engineers of all specialties right here in Wisconsin, where they can do critically important work for our national defense or in the commercial shipbuilding and repair sector.”
Fincantieri has increased its internship programs and research efforts over the previous two years in an effort to engage top-tier engineering programs, according to Dr. Gabriele Librandi, Fincantieri Marine Group’s director of research and innovation in the United States. Librandi has created similar research projects and relationships with the University of Michigan and Virginia Tech for Fincantieri. Librandi worked with the UW-Madison’s International Academic Programs office to help engineering students land study- and work-abroad internships.
“It was inspiring to see firsthand the scale and sophistication of the work being done at Fincantieri Marinette Marine,” said UW–Madison Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin. “This partnership creates meaningful opportunities for our students to apply their engineering skills in real-world, high-impact settings right here in Wisconsin and around the world. It’s a powerful example of how collaboration between industry and the university can help drive innovation, grow talent, and strengthen our state’s workforce.”
This year, Fincantieri is sending four Badger students to Italy for two months, where they will work with one of the world’s largest and most innovative maritime companies operating in the cruise, naval, and offshore sectors. Once in Italy, the students will attend an abbreviated naval engineering course at the University of Trieste and then work alongside Fincantieri engineers in Trieste for the summer.
Fincantieri Marine Group CEO Marco Galbiati added, “Being a globally recognized maritime leader, we understand that the demand for talent, especially engineers, is increasingly competitive.” Galbiati added that attracting and retaining top talent is important to the company’s sustainability strategy. “I am sure that these students are going to enjoy working with the brightest minds in the business, and they will get an appreciation for the pride that comes with being a part of the Fincantieri team, even if for only the summer.”

MARINETTE, WISCONSIN – Last week Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s Board of Directors approved Jan Allman to assume the duties as FMM’s CEO beginning this week. Current FMM CEO Mark Vandroff is returning to Fincantieri Marine Group in a new role as the Senior Vice President of Government Relations in Washington D.C.
Allman is quite familiar with Fincantieri operations in Northeast Wisconsin, as she has served as the VP and General Manager of Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding since April 2023, and previously served as FMG’s Senior Vice President for Public Affairs and Community Relations and as the former CEO of Marinette Marine for seven years (2014-2021).
Vandroff returns to D.C. where he started with FMG in 2021. Vandroff will manage the company’s outreach with senior government leaders, including the Department of Defense, the Navy, and elected and appointed officials.
Marco Galbiati, CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group, offered his congratulations to both senior leaders. "I want to thank Mark for his exceptional leadership at FMM, and I look forward to working with him as we navigate our company's many opportunities with government stakeholders in Washington," said Galbiati.
"And I want to welcome Jan back to Marinette, where she spent many years overseeing the successful production of Freedom-class LCSs and the start of the Frigate program," Galbiati added.
FMM is currently finishing the detail design of the lead ship of the Constellation-class Frigate (FFG 62) program. Construction efforts are expected to ramp up later this Spring, and the lead ship is scheduled to deliver in 2029. FMM has contracts for five additional Frigates to follow the lead ship, so construction is expected to continue in Marinette for the next decade and beyond.

MARINETTE, WISCONSIN – In a move to support its workforce, Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) is providing eligible employees with a $5,000 tax-free benefit for childcare or dependent family member care in 2025.
Recognizing the burden of rising childcare costs, FMM employees highlighted this concern in annual surveys. After consulting with the Navy, FMM leadership decided to implement a program to assist families with dependent care expenses as well. Each eligible family will receive a $5,000 tax-free benefit through a flexible spending account, enhancing their overall benefits package.
"We listened to our employees' concerns and understand the challenges they face while building the Navy’s Constellation-class Frigates," said Mark Vandroff, CEO of FMM.
The childcare stipend is one of several initiatives FMM has introduced to support shipbuilders and their families. This month, hundreds of frigate program shipbuilders will receive their second cash bonus of the year, amounting to $5,000 for 2024. The Blue-Collar Retention Bonus, introduced this year, makes certain employees eligible for up to $10,000 in 2024-2025.
Fincantieri Marine Group CEO Marco Galbiati thanked Congress and military leaders for funding these initiatives. "We are grateful to the U.S. Navy and Congress for supporting our blue-collar workforce, and we appreciate their continued support of shipbuilding."
With six frigates under contract and four additional ships expected to be awarded in the coming years, FMM is committed to stabilizing its workforce to continue building ships for the Navy. FMM received the frigate contract in April 2020, to build the first-in-class USS Constellation and up to nine additional ships. The initial contract was for $795 million, but options drive the overall contract value to more than $5 billion. Since award, FMM has been actively recruiting and retaining several hundred shipbuilders in an extremely tight labor market for American shipbuilding.

Norway Selects Constellation-Class Frigate as Contender for Norwegian Navy
WASHINGTON DC – While the U.S. Navy’s first Constellation-Class Frigate (FFG 62) is under construction in the United States, Norway is showing serious interest in the guided-missile frigate, as well as bolstering its longstanding strategic partnership with America.
Last week Norwegian Minister of Defence, Mr. Bjørn Arild Gram, released a statement confirming that Norway is considering the Constellation-Class Frigate, as well as three other designs from outside the country. Norway is interested in procuring five or six ships, so this program would be the single largest investment in Norwegian armed forces’ history.
“I have confidence in the Constellation-Class Frigate, and I am excited about Norway’s decision to evaluate it as a potential key component of their fleet,” said Marco Galbiati, CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group in Washington D.C.
Galbiati oversees Fincantieri’s U.S. shipyards, including Marinette Marine where the first 10 Constellation-class Frigates are being built for the U.S. Navy.
Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG), in collaboration with its Norwegian sister company, Vard, has proposed building and maintaining these frigates in Norway. Fincantieri is uniquely positioned to construct vessels in Norway and efficiently manage the complexities of a first-in-class build.
Last week representatives from FMG, Vard, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon were in Oslo to discuss this important program with potential Norwegian industry partners and government officials.
The Norwegian government is expected to select a frigate and strategic partner in 2025 for up to six anti-submarine frigates for their future fleet. The Constellation’s primary mission is ASW (anti-submarine warfare) with capabilities similar to traditional frigate roles, like escorting surface ships, battlegroups and conducting independent operations.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding made maritime history yesterday with the delivery of the largest U.S. Jones Act-compliant vessel, a 12,000 sq. ft. LNG bunker barge named Progress to Crowley.
"Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding continues to be an industry leader in building LNG bunkering barges,” said Jan Allman, vice president and general manager of FBS. “We take tremendous pride in seeing another FBS-built vessel leave Sturgeon Bay to its new operational home port. I am proud of the work of our entire Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding team."
Progress was designed by Crowley’s engineering services group, and the 416-ft. barge can carry 3.17 million gallons (12,000 cubic meters) of liquefied natural gas. The vessel will provide ship operators at the port of Savannah, Georgia with access to a cleaner energy source. LNG is the lowest carbon-based fuel currently available to maritime shipping. LNG is reported to have 23% less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to very/ultra low sulfur fuel oil.
“From a shipbuilder’s perspective, being involved in a build like this is extremely rewarding,” explained FBS Director of Program Management Jeff Frank. “Part of you is in the ship. It goes with the ship when it leaves the yard.
“I think any shipbuilder who is in shipbuilding for any length of time has that sentiment of hard work that leaves with every ship. I’ve been in the business for 29 years and I never get tired of that feeling. As they say, shipbuilding is hard. There is nothing easy about it because every ship is different in some form or fashion. But, I think the payoff for all of us is watching a ship sail away and knowing that it is going to perform for its customer.”
“The Progress LNG bunker barge sets a new standard for quality and capability to serve the energy needs of the shipping industry,” said James C. Fowler, senior vice president and general manager, Crowley Shipping. “LNG offers a safe and reliable solution for ocean carriers that advances the transition to lower emissions. We congratulate the people whose dedication and hard work in designing and building this world-class vessel allowed us to reach this milestone for the U.S. industry and our customers.”
This is the third LNG barge built by FBS.
